Despite its durability, the hip joint isn’t indestructible. With age and use, the cartilage can wear down or become damaged.
Lubricant in the hip can leak through damaged cartilage, this causes excessive wear. Muscles and tendons in the hip can get overused, and overuse can inflame structures like bursa’s (fat pads) in and around the joint.
Also the hip bone itself can be fractured during a fall or other injury. Any of these conditions can lead to hip pain.
If a heavy, 80 year old lady comes in the clinic, immediately the practitioner may have a different view on what maybe wrong with her hip verses a thin, 20 year old.
