With the summer (hopefully) on its way you’re probably considering ditching the winter boots and wellies in favour of flip-flops and summer sandals. Of course, you’re probably also wondering how to get your feet summer ready after a winter of neglect.
If you want your feet to be summer ready, it’s actually wise to think about caring for them year-round. Don’t worry – if it wasn’t top of your priority list our Podiatrist, Daniella, has created a list of top tips advising you on how to get your feet summer ready now and in the months beyond.
Wash your feet
Using warm water and soap, wash your feet thoroughly. You can use an exfoliating brush or glove to help remove dead skill cells for smooth summer feet.
Important! Make sure you dry in between your toes – this helps prevent the spread of fungal infections such as athlete’s foot.
Hydrate your skin
Apply a heavy moisturiser to keep your summer feet hydrated and to prevent cracking. It’s also important to stay hydrated – drink plenty of water throughout the day. Dehydration can cause itchy and scaly patches on the skin.
Limit Nail Varnish
When thinking about how to get your feet summer ready it’s important to avoid prolonged nail varnish wearing as it can cause the top layer of your nails to dry out. If this happens fungus, yeast, and other bacteria start to form under the nail plate – this can lead to longer-term problems if not managed or treated properly.
Keep your feet covered
Slipper, sandal, or flip-flop? Whatever your choice of shoes, wear them at all times.
It’s tempting to walk barefoot in the summer but you’re at risk of stepping on things, such as a thorn, that can become easily embedded in your foot.
You may also be hitting the pool more, keeping your feet covered reduces the likelihood of picking up a verucca.
This list is a great guide on how to get your feet summer ready, however, if you have any concerns about your feet we can help.
